Continuing our spring migration up the East Coast from Florida, we snowbirds make a very satisfying stopover in Charleston, South Carolina. Condé Nast named Charleston “one of America’s most delightful cities” and Southern Living readers voted it “Best Southern City.” Charleston calls itself “America’s Most Historic City.” Read more

Miami Beach
Flying to and landing at Miami International Airport took about three hours and some change. I was relieved that Jinx, my cat, who hadn’t stirred in his carrier since leaving New York, now let out a large toothy yawn, ruffled his back and curled back into place-so much for a chatty travel companion, that little beast.
As I stood, looking very much New York, in a backdrop of tropical hues, leafy palms and coral stonework, a car met us at the curb. Shedding a black Dries Van Noten cardigan, now tied around my waist, I grabbed my vintage train case and Jinx and jumped into the backseat. Read more

As we snowbirds all head north and, like the swallows, come back to Capistrano … I mean Fire Island! … we should be sure to stop for a night or two in Savannah, Georgia. Spring is beautiful in Savannah, “The Hostess City of the South,” when all the azaleas are in bloom. Read more

Earth Day celebrated its 40th birthday on April 22 and Turtle Bay had a celebration of its own. Nestled in the heart of the City, soprano Molly Watson regaled the Richmond Room at the Turtle Bay Music School on 52nd Street on the East Side. And what a celebration it became.
Imagine. The evening is balmy with breezes that blow down the cross-town streets with hints of rain on their breath. As you look this way and that to cross the street, the western sky is brilliant with a sunset made more dramatic by a volcano halfway round the world. And Molly Watson’s salute to American and English composers and poets was the perfect tribute for spring.
At this entertainment in three acts, the first act consisted of Read more

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s annual Philadelphia International Flower Show, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, has, over the past few years, saluted New Orleans jazz, Irish legends, and ‘Bella Italia.’ This year’s spectacle, from February 28 to March 7, strove to take on the world, or a sample of it, anyway, with “Passport to the World” as its theme. Carnival season in New Orleans this year was even more of a three-ring circus than usual: there was a mayoral primary on February 6, in which Louisiana’s Republican Governor Bobby Jindal’s Democratic Lieutenant Governor, Mitch Landrieu, was anointed as the Crescent City’s first Caucasian mayor in 32 years, Read more

Following the close of our 2009 seasonal share on Fire Island, the first weekend in October, my identical twin Ruth and I overcame our procrastination tendencies and immediately planned and booked a trip to Las Vegas for the sole purpose of seeing Bette Midler. This was to be a long overdue and well-deserved vacation. Due to our obligations and Bette’s schedule the first opportunity would be in January 2010. Book it Dano-we used the Internet, a new phenomenon for Ruth, and arranged flights-Jet Blue, hotel-The Mirage, tickets for Bette Midler-”The Showgirl Must Go On,” at The Colosseum at Caesar’s Palace, as well as one of the eight Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil shows now playing in Vegas. Robert Bonanno, who spends summers in Fire Island Pines and has given us two sensitive books of his photos and reflections, “Lessons from the Beach: Reflections from Fire Island” and “Reflections of Love from Fire Island: Lessons from the Beach Continue,” during the past two seasons, has collected a dozen of his beautiful photos-of the beach, the bay, Nature, and the people-into a handsome new “Reflections from Fire Island” 2010 calendar. The calendar is available from www.lulu.com and is priced at $15.22. “Deep in December, it’s nice to remember”-now that it is post-season, it is good to gaze again at these images, which whet the appetite for the return to the Island next season.
