When gay ancestor Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” (1879) reentered the Metropolitan Opera repertory on January 30, the low-voiced male leads, Thomas Hampson in the title part and Sergei Aleksashkin as his cousin, Prince Gremin, resumed roles taken in earlier seasons, while the higher-voiced singers, Karita Mattila and Ekaterina Semenchuk as sisters Tatiana and Olga Larina and Piotr Beczala as Lenski, Olga’s fiancé, introduced interpretations here. It was the kind of performance, sensitively paced by Jirí Belohlávek, that reminded that “Onegin” is very much an opera comprising individual musical numbers-as opposed to Read more

The new year’s first Metropolitan Opera performance of Gaetano Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor,” under Marco Armiliato’s baton on January 26, held great promise, offering the return to the company of starry duo Anna Netrebko, for a first appearance after giving birth to a first child, Tiago, and Rolando Villazón, for a reappearance after a couple of years’ absence, newly assuming the opera’s principal roles of Lucia and Edgardo opposite each other, but neither singer, for one reason and another, entirely fulfilled all that promise. So is it me, or is there an unwritten law among gays that you must not go by a nickname. For example, if your given name is Thomas, you must go by Thomas, or by Tom (preferably Thom) but — under NO circumstances — can you go by Tommy. Unless of course you are a club kid or just drop-dead gorgeous…then all the rules go out the window.

WhiteHouse.gov, the official site of the President, was updated to reflect the changeover from President George Bush to President Barack Obama within a few minutes of Obama’s inauguration. Has anyone visited the site yet, and if so, have you seen The Agenda page? I have to say that I am impressed—it lays out Obama’s civil rights agenda, which includes broad support for the LGBT community. Read more
